Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: poly- comb. form, ethylene n.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + ethylene n. In polyethylene glycol n. at sense 1b after German †Polyaethylenglycol (1885 in the passage translated in quot. 1886 for polyethylene glycol n. at sense 1b; now usually Polyethylenglykol). With sense 1 compare French polyéthylène (M. Berthelot 1867, in Jrnl. de pharmacie et de chimie 6 28), and compare also slightly earlier polyethylenic adj. With sense 2 compare polythene n.
I. Compounds.
