Etymology: < scientific Latin Polyergus (P. A. Latreille 1804, in Nouveau dict. hist. nat. 24 179) < Hellenistic Greek πολύεργος hard-working < ancient Greek πολυ- poly- comb. form + ἔργον work (see erg n.¹). Compare French polyergue (1869 in Littré).
