Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek πολύδιψος causing excessive thirst ( < ancient Greek πολυ- poly- comb. form + δίψα thirst: see dipsas n.) + -ia suffix¹. In quot. 1773 and later use probably after post-classical Latin polydipsia (1769 or earlier in a medical context). Compare ancient Greek πολυδίψιος very thirsty. With the form poludipsie compare -y suffix³.

Excessive thirst; excessive water consumption. In quot. 1661 figurative.Polydipsia is a prominent symptom of diabetes mellitus and insipidus and in the earliest quotations is used as a name for these diseases (esp. diabetes insipidus). Cf. polyuria n.
