释义

polycythaemiapolycythemian.

Brit. /ˌpɒlɪsʌɪˈθiːmɪə/, U.S. /ˈˌpɑliˌsaɪˈθimiə/
Forms: 1800s– polycythaemia, 1900s– polycythemia.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: poly- comb. form, -cyte comb. form, -haemia comb. form.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + -cyte comb. form + -haemia comb. form, after German Polycythaemie (J. Vogel 1854, in R. Virchow Handb. der speciellen Path. u. Therapie I. iv. 377).
Medicine.
An abnormally high number or concentration of circulating red blood cells; an instance of this. Also: any disorder characterized by this; esp. (in full polycythaemia rubra, polycythaemia rubra vera, polycythaemia vera), a myeloproliferative disorder in which there is abnormal proliferation of red blood cell precursors, often accompanied by increased numbers of leucocytes and platelets. In absolute polycythaemia there is an increase in circulating red blood cell mass; this may be primary, as in polycythaemia vera, or secondary (to hypoxia or to increased erythropoietin production). Relative polycythaemia results from reduced plasma volume.
