Origin: Of multiple origins. A borrowing from Latin. Partly also a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Latin pragmatica; Spanish pragmática.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pragmatica pragmatic sanction (5th cent.), use as noun (short for pragmatica sanctio , pragmatica iussio , pragmatica constitutio ) of feminine singular of classical Latin pragmaticus (see pragmatic adj. and n.); frequently via Spanish pragmática (1480). Compare Catalan pragmática (1647 or earlier), Portuguese pragmática (c1543), Italian prammatica (a1556; a1536 as pragmatica ). Compare earlier pragmatic n.
Now historical.
A royal ordinance or edict, esp. of the Spanish Court, having the force of law. Cf. pragmatic sanction n. at pragmatic adj. 1, pragmatic n. 1.
