Etymology: < praepositor, variant of prepositor n.1 + -ship suffix, after German Präpositur (1761 in the passage translated in quot. 17621). Compare post-classical Latin præpositātus (see provosty n.).
Obsolete. rare.
A group of parishes under one ecclesiastical superintendent; an area of ecclesiastical administration.
