Forms: 1800s akratic, 1800s– acratic. Also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; perhaps modelled on a German lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Greek ἄκρατος , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἄκρατος unmixed, pure (see acrasia n.) + -ic suffix, after German Akratopegen or post-classical Latin Akratopegae chemically indifferent springs (both 1838 in A. Vetter Theoretisch-praktisches Handbuch der Heilquellenlehre pp. xiii, 130).
Now rare.
Of a spa or its waters: distinguished by water purity rather than mineral content; clear, tasteless.
