Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin polycladia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin polycladia (1824 or earlier) < Hellenistic Greek πολύκλαδος having many branches (see polycladous adj.) + classical Latin -ia -y suffix3. Compare French polycladie (1869 in Littré).Compare the following example of the post-classical Latin word in an English context:1856 J. S. Henslow Dict. Bot. Terms 141 Polycladia, where there is a supernumerary development of leaves and branches; as in the diseased state called Plica.
Botany. Now rare.
The formation of an abnormal number of branches; an abnormal degree of branching.
