Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: poly- comb. form, chromatic adj.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + chromatic adj., originally after French polychromatique (in acide polychromatique (Boutin 1839, in L'Institut 27 Dec. 454/2). Compare ancient Greek πολυχρώματος many-coloured (see polychromatous adj.); also Italian policromatico (1867 in physics; compare sense 3b). Compare earlier polychromic adj., polychrome adj. and monochromatic adj., achromatic adj.
