Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek πολυχόρδος.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek πολυχόρδος many-stringed < ancient Greek πολυ- poly- comb. form + χορδή chord n.1 Compare Italian policordo (noun) instrument with many strings (a1647). With use as noun compare earlier monochord n., tetrachord n., decachord n., etc.
