Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: poly- comb. form, basic adj.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + basic adj. In sense 3 after polybase n. Compare earlier tribasic adj. and also monobasic adj., bibasic adj.
Chemistry.
1. Of an acid: having more than one replaceable hydrogen atom per molecule, or two or more carboxylic acid groups. Formerly also: †designating a salt of such an acid (obsolete).
