Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps in quot. 1548 simply an error for pallet n.1, subsequently misinterpreted in quot. 1846. There is hence probably no connection with epaulette n. 3.
Obsolete. rare.
Perhaps: a small piece of armour protecting the head or upper body; an epaulette.
