Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Polle , syndrome n.
Etymology: < Polle, mistakenly thought to have been the forename of a daughter of the real Baron von Munchausen (see Munchausen n., and quot. 1977) + syndrome n.The child in question, who died in infancy, was born to Munchausen's second wife but probably not fathered by him; she was baptized Maria Wilhelmina in the German town of Polle.

We suggest cases similar to those reported by Dr Meadow should be known as the Polle syndrome—a child of a Munchausen whose life expectancy is liable to be short.
