Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pocularius.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pocularius relating to a cup, i.e. to drinking (1537 in the passage translated in quot. 1537) < classical Latin pōculum poculum n. + -ārius -ary suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin pocularis for drinking (2nd or 3rd cent.). N.E.D. (1907) notes that this word has been ‘Erroneously explained as = “cup” by Davies, whence in other Dict[ionarie]s.’: compare note at manuary n. 1 on the same passage.
Obsolete. rare.
A pardon or indulgence for drinking.
