Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French poitrinal.
Etymology: In sense 1 < Old French poitrinal chest, breast (of a deer) (end of the 12th cent.), probably figurative use of a sense ‘breastplate for an animal’ which is not itself recorded (although compare Middle French potrinal (rare), probably in sense ‘breastplate for a horse’ (1587), poitrinal (adjective) of the chest (1571)) < poitrine chest, breast (see poitrinaire n.) + -al -al suffix1. In sense 2 < French poitrinal petronel (see petronel n.).In form petronel in quot. 1633 at sense 1 probably influenced by existing petronel n. (compare sense 2).
