Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from French. Etymons: poise v., -ant suffix1; French poisant, pesant.
Etymology: Either < poise v. + -ant suffix1, or directly < Middle French poisant, variant of pesant peisant adj. Compare Anglo-Norman poisant (c1235 or earlier). Compare earlier peisant adj.
Obsolete.
Forcible, powerful; weighty, heavy. Cf. peisant adj. 1.
