Etymology: < pneumo- comb. form + coccus n., after German Pneumokokkus (1884 or earlier; compare slightly earlier German Pneumoniekokkus (1883 or earlier)). Compare scientific Latin Pneumococcus (1888 or earlier), French pneumocoque (1889), pneumococcus (1888 or earlier).
Microbiology.
Originally: the bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae (Friedländer's bacillus), which is an opportunistic pathogen causing pneumonia and other infections, often in hospitalized patients (see klebsiella n.) (now historical). Later: the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae, occurring as Gram-positive oval or spherical forms, typically in pairs, which causes the most common type of bacterial pneumonia (often lobar in distribution in adults) as well as other infections including otitis media and meningitis.
