Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pneumatosis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pneumatosis accumulation of air in the stomach or intestines (5th cent. in a medical writer; a1250 in a British source as neumatosis ), nervous activity (1664 in a British source) < ancient Greek πνευμάτωσις evaporation, in Hellenistic Greek also accumulation of air in the stomach or intestines < πνευματοῦν to turn into vapour, to blow up, inflate ( < πνευματ- , πνεῦμα wind, breath: see pneuma n.) + -ωσις -osis suffix. Compare French pneumatose generation of nervous activity in the brain (1665 or earlier), windiness of the stomach (1752 or earlier), accumulation of gas in the intestinal wall (in pneumatose intestinale: 1828 or earlier).
