Etymology: < classical Latin portentum portent, sign, omen, prodigy, monster, marvellous tale, use as noun of neuter of past participle of portendere portend v.1 Compare (all in sense 2) Middle French, French †portente (1477), Catalan portent (1696), Spanish portento (1584), Portuguese portento (c1539), Italian (c1340).The stress was originally on the second syllable, and this stress pattern is found until the 19th cent. Stress on the first syllable is found from the early 18th cent. (Pope's verse, for example, shows both stress patterns.)
