Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French porte-lumière.
Etymology: < French porte-lumière thing which spreads light (16th cent. in Middle French), reflector in a truncated cone (1799), instrument for introducing light into a dark place (1803) < porte- porte- comb. form + lumière light (see son et lumière n.).
Now rare.
An apparatus containing a plane mirror which can be adjusted so as to reflect the sun's light in any desired direction.
