Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French porte, porter.
Etymology: < French porte, stem of porter port v.2, found in a large number of compounds with a noun as the second element.Such formations are found in French from the Old French period onwards, and loans are found in English from the Middle English period onwards (e.g. porteous n., portlof n.). A number of early borrowings are naturalized, with frequent spelling of the first element as port- ; for remodelling of the second element in an early adaptation see portfire n. Formations within English are also found, such as port-flask n., port-electric adj., and perhaps also port-pain n., porte-acid n. .
Forming the names of objects, instruments, etc., which bear or carry (sometimes in a figurative sense) the item denoted by the second element (usually a French noun).
porte-acid n. Medicine Obsolete rare an instrument for applying a small amount of acid to the skin, consisting of a narrow glass tube containing a small wad of absorbent material soaked in the acid, which may be pushed down the tube to make contact with the skin.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
