Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin portator.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin portator bearer or carrier (4th cent.) < classical Latin portāt- , past participial stem of portāre port v.2 + -or -or suffix. Compare Middle French portateur (1540 in an apparently isolated attestation). The early forms of the ending suggest an Anglo-Norman etymon, but none is recorded.
Obsolete.
