Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian portantina.
Etymology: < Italian portantina (1745) < portante bearing, carrying, supporting (13th cent.; use as adjective of present participle of portare port v.2) + -ina -ina suffix. Compare French portantine (1811 or earlier).
Now rare.
In Italian contexts: a sedan chair (see also quot. 1793).
