Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese português.
Etymology: Apparently < Portuguese português (not dated in dictionaries of Portuguese, but see note below), use as noun of português Portuguese adj., with the final -s being interpreted as a plural ending. Compare post-classical Latin portugalensis (?1522 in a British source, in Corr. Thomas More (1947) 257). Compare later Portuguese n. 2 and the foreign-language parallels cited at that entry, and also later Portugal n. 2.The coin was apparently first minted in Portugal in 1506; it was accepted in many countries all over the world. Compare also the following for an occurrence of the English word in a Latin context:1559 in R. G. Marsden Sel. Pleas Court Admiralty (1897) II. 110 Duo aurea numismata sive pecias auri vulgo dictas portigewies.
Now rare (archaic or historical in later use).
A Portuguese gold coin current in the 16th cent.; a cruzado; = Portugal n. 2.Often kept as an heirloom or keepsake.
