Etymology: < the female forename Polly (compare Poll (see Poll n.3), Molly (see molly n.1)), after Poll n.3In the following quot. Jonson refers to two informants, Robert Pooly (or Poley , Poole ) and a certain Parrot ; there may be a pun intended, hence implying earlier currency of the word (compare quot. 1600 at Poll n.3):1616 B. Jonson Epigrammes ci, in Wks. I. 800 And we will haue no Pooly', or Parrot by.

Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: Apollinaris n.
Etymology: Shortened < Apollinaris n.: see -y suffix6. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) interpreted Pollys in the following quot. as an early use of the present word, but it probably in fact shows the plural of the personal forename Polly, the name of the waitress who is being paid (three Pollys referring to a tip of one penny from each of the three people served): 1852 C. Dickens Bleak House (1853) xx. 200 Four small rums is eight and three, and three Pollys is eight and six.
