Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin Pollūc- , Pollūx , -ite suffix¹.

Etymology: < classical Latin Pollūc-, Pollūx (see Pollux n.) + -ite suffix¹, after German Pollux (A. Breithaupt 1846, in Ann. der Physik u. Chemie 69 439), so named on account of its having been first discovered in association with the similar mineral Castor (see castorite n.; now called petalite n.). Compare earlier Pollux n. 3.

Mineralogy.

A rare mineral of the cubic crystal system which consists of a hydrated aluminosilicate of caesium and sodium, (Cs,Na)₂Al₂Si₄O₁₂·H₂O, occurring as transparent colourless crystals, esp. in pegmatites, and used as a gemstone.
