Etymology: < pollen n. or its etymon classical Latin pollin-, pollen + -ation suffix. Compare (in different sense) French pollination emission of pollen by plants (1812). Compare slightly earlier pollinization n.
The transfer of pollen from male to female reproductive organs in seed plants; the action of pollinating a plant. Also: the receipt of pollen by a stigma or ovule, initiating fertilization or fruit development. Also figurative.hand-, open pollination, etc.: see the first element.
