Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Pluviales , -ine suffix1.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pluviales, former group name (see note), probably < Pluvialis , genus name (Brisson 1760, after earlier use as a specific name (in Charadrius Pluvialis ) by Linnaeus in 1735; < post-classical Latin pluvialis plover or rain-bird (1645 in Aldrovandus in e.g. pluvialis cinereus , pluvialis maior ; 1635 or earlier as avis pluvialis ); < classical Latin pluviālis rainy: see pluvial adj. and n.2, and compare plover n.) + -ine suffix1. Compare scientific Latin Pluvialinae , subfamily name (MacGillivray 1852), and post-classical Latin pluviarius (see plover n.).For the group name Pluviales compare: 1890 Cent. Dict. 4572/2 Pluviales, the plovers and plover-like birds: synonymous with Charadriomorphæ.
