Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek Πολιαδ- , Πολιάς , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek Πολιαδ-, Πολιάς (female) guardian of the city, epithet of Athene as tutelary goddess of Athens ( < πόλις city (see polis n.2) + -άς -ad suffix1) + -ic suffix. Compare French poliade (dated 1771 in Robert Dict. alphabétique et analogique (1986)).
Chiefly Ancient History. rare.
Of the nature of or relating to a tutelary god of a city or state.
