Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pointillé.
Etymology: < French pointillé, past participle of pointiller to mark or represent with small points or dots (1414 in Middle French) < point point n.1 + -iller, frequentative suffix. N.E.D. (1907) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (pwæṅtilye) /pwɛ̃tije/.

Ornamented with a design or pattern composed of fine dots. Of a tool: used to engrave or incise such designs. Also figurative.
