Origin: Apparently either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from French, combined with an English element. Etymons: point n.1, -elle suffix; French point , -elle suffix.
Etymology: Apparently < point n.1 or its etymon French point (compare point n.3) + -elle suffix. French pointelle in the same sense is first recorded much later than the English word, and is probably a loan from English.
Originally U.S.
A style of knitwear with eyelet-holes giving a lacy effect; a garment, or trimming for a garment, knitted in this style. Frequently attributive.A proprietary name in the United States.
