Etymology: Apparently < point n.¹ + device n., at first in the phrase at point device , perhaps after Anglo-Norman en poynt devis, probably ‘on the appointed square (in the game of chess)’ (13th cent. in an apparently isolated attestation: see below), in which devis apparently shows the adjective devis (either < classical Latin dīvīsum , past participle of dīvidere divide v., or < Anglo-Norman and Old French deviser devise v.).
