单词 point-device
释义

point-devicen.adv.adj.

Brit. /ˌpɔɪntdᵻˈvʌɪs/, U.S. /ˌpɔɪn(t)dəˈvaɪs/
Forms: Middle English point-deuys, Middle English point-devys, Middle English poynt-deuys, Middle English poynt-devis, Middle English poynt-devys, Middle English poynte-device, Middle English 1600s poynt-devise, Middle English–1500s poynt-devyse, Middle English– point-device, 1500s pointe-deuice, 1500s pointe-deuise, 1500s poynt-deuyce, 1500s poynt-deuyse, 1500s poynte-deuyse, 1500s poynte-devyse, 1500s–1600s point-deuice, 1500s–1600s point-deuise, 1600s point-deuis, 1600s poynt-deuice, 1600s poynt-deuise, 1600s–1700s 1900s– point-devise; N.E.D. (1907) also records forms of the second element late Middle English point-deuise, 1500s point-devise, 1500s point-devyce.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: point n.1, device n.
Etymology: Apparently < point n.1 + device n., at first in the phrase at point device , perhaps after Anglo-Norman en poynt devis, probably ‘on the appointed square (in the game of chess)’ (13th cent. in an apparently isolated attestation: see below), in which devis apparently shows the adjective devis (either < classical Latin dīvīsum , past participle of dīvidere divide v., or < Anglo-Norman and Old French deviser devise v.). Compare also Old French, Middle French a point and its Middle English equivalent at point at point n.1 Phrases 1b, and also Old French, Middle French a devis , a devise and their Middle English equivalent at device at device n. 12; it is possible that Middle English at point device could represent a blend of the two expressions, independent of Anglo-Norman en poynt devis. The Anglo-Norman phrase is apparently attested only in the following example:a1300 Les Gius Partiz des Eschez (Royal) 33 E en mesme la manere cum cy veyez En poynt devis li mater porrez. Compare point-vice adj. and adv.
Now chiefly archaic.
A. n.
Originally and chiefly in at point device: at or to the point of perfection; completely; precisely; with extreme nicety or correctness. to the point device: to perfection. by point device: through or by virtue of nicety, decorum, etc. In later use, without preposition: precision; correctness; nicety; perfection; (occasionally) the perfect embodiment or epitomeof something. Obsolete.
