单词 | plutino |
释义 | Plutinon. Astronomy. Any of a number of planetoids (occupying the inner part of the Kuiper belt) which follow orbits resembling that of Pluto in being in 3:2 resonance with the orbit of Neptune. ΚΠ 1994 Sci. News 19 Nov. 334/1 Pluto has the same relationship with Neptune, prompting Jewitt to dub the bodies ‘Plutinos’ and lending support to the notion that Pluto itself originated in the Kuiper belt. 1996 D. Jewitt & J. Luu in J. W. Rettig & J. M. Hahn Completing Inventory of Solar Syst. 255 Many of these objects reside in or near the 3:2 mean motion resonance with Neptune, as does Pluto. Accordingly, we have dubbed them ‘Plutinos’ (little Plutos) to highlight their dynamical similarity with Pluto, and to distinguish them from other Kuiper belt objects whose orbits are not closely controlled by nearby, massive Neptune. 2000 Nature 26 Oct. 953/2 Classical KBOs make up the bulk of the Kuiper belt, being five times more numerous than Plutinos of comparable size. This is a new entry (OED Third Edition, September 2006; most recently modified version published online March 2022). < n.1994 |
