Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: plus prep., one n.
Etymology: < plus prep. + one n., with allusion to the convention of indicating on invitations that the named person may bring one guest by following his or her name with the formula ‘plus one’ (compare quot. 1992).
A person who accompanies another to an event as that person's nominated guest, but who has not been specifically invited.
