Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French poign-, poindre.
Etymology: < poign-, poign-, stem of Anglo-Norman and Middle French poindre to pierce, prick (see poignant adj.). With the formation compare join v.1 from Old French joindre . With sense 1 perhaps compare use of point v.1 in Middle English in the sense ‘to stitch, mend’ (see Middle English Dict. at pointen v.(1)).In Middle English prefixed and unprefixed forms of the past participle are attested (see y- prefix).
