Etymology: < ancient Greek ποικιλο-, combining form (in e.g. ποικιλόμορϕος variegated) of ποικίλος many-coloured, variegated, various ( < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit piṃś- to cut, trim, prepare, adorn, piś- to hew out, carve, adorn, Avestan paēs- to decorate, Old Church Slavonic pĭsati to write, pĭstrŭ multicoloured, Lithuanian piešti to draw, and faw adj.); compare -o- connective. Compare poecilo- comb. form.Formations are found from the late 19th cent., earliest modelled on German formations (e.g. poikilothermal adj.). Compare French poecilo- (see poecilo- comb. form).
