Etymology: < scientific Latin Plumularia, genus name ( Lamarck Hist. nat. animaux sans vertèbres (1816) II. 123) < classical Latin plūmula little feather (see plumula n.) + -ārius -ary suffix¹. Compare French Plumulaire (1816 in Lamarck).

Zoology.

A genus of hydroids of the suborder Leptomedusae, colonies of which have alternating branches from the main stem, each of which bears polyps on one side only; (also plumularia) an animal of this genus.
