Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin plūmōsus.
Etymology: < classical Latin plūmōsus covered with feathers, feathered, (of plants) downy < plūma plume n. + -ōsus -ose suffix1. Compare French plumeux (1783 in a botanical sense: see plumous adj.). Compare slightly earlier plumosity n. and also plumous adj.In plumose alum n. at Compounds after post-classical Latin alumen plumosum.
1. Originally Mineralogy, now chiefly Botany and Zoology. Resembling a feather in structure or appearance; feathery, downy; esp. having two series of fine separated filaments on opposite sides; having fine secondary hairs (applied esp. to the pappus in some plants of the family Asteraceae ( Compositae), or the hairs composing this). Cf. plumous adj.
