释义

Brit. /əˈkwɪst/, U.S. /əˈkwɪst/

Etymology: Probably partly (i) a variant of acquest n., after post-classical Latin acquisitum, also (with elision of unstressed medial vowel) acquistum acquisition, property acquired or purchased (12th cent.; from 13th cent. in British sources; use as noun of neuter past participle of classical Latin acquīrere acquire v.) and Italian acquisto action or process of acquiring something (a1294), thing which is or has been acquired (a1306; < acquistare acquist v.), and partly (ii) < acquist v. Compare earlier acquirement n., acquiring n., acquisition n. N.E.D. (1884) comments: ‘Commonly used for the action, while acquest n. is more common for the result.’
Now rare.
