单词 | pluminary |
释义 | pluminaryn. Probably a scribal error for classical Latin plūmāriōs, accusative singular of plūmārius embroiderer (Varro; in post-classical Latin also in the Vulgate (Exodus 35:35)) in the Stephens MS (1620), which was carried over into the 1652 edition; N.E.D. (1908) defines the word as ‘Perhaps: a worker or dealer in plumes or feathers’ and etymologizes it as ‘irreg. < plume n.’, comparing post-classical Latin pluminare a pillow stuffed with feathers (1329 in an Italian source).See further the edition of Donne's Paradoxes and Problems by H. Peters (1980), pp. 47–9 (text) and 125–6 (notes).
