Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin plūmi-, plūma, cornu.
Etymology: < classical Latin plūmi-, combining form (in e.g. plūmipēs plumiped adj.) of plūma plume n. + cornu horn (see cornu n.).
Ornithology. Now rare.
A tuft or crest of feathers on top of a bird's head; esp. either of the paired ear tufts typical of many owls.
