Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin plūmi-, coma.
Etymology: < classical Latin plūmi-, combining form (in e.g. plūmipēs plumiped adj.) of plūma plume n. + coma the hair of the head (see coma n.2).
Zoology. rare.
In siliceous sponges: a type of six-rayed spicule (hexaster) each of whose rays branches to form a feather-like tuft.

1911 Encycl. Brit. XXV. 723/1 A hexaster (= rosette) is a perfectly symmetrical hexact whose actines branch out into secondary or terminal rays. Various sub-types are distinguished according to the character of the rays (floricome, plumicome, &c.).
