Etymology: < Middle French plumeté, plumetté, adjective (1581 or earlier in heraldic use; earlier in more general senses ‘covered with feather-shaped metal scales’ (1322), ‘(of goldsmiths' work) decorated with motives imitating a feather’ (1325); French plumeté (now historical in heraldic uses)) < plumette little feather (early 13th cent. in Old French as plumete ; < plume plume n. + -ette -ette suffix) + -y suffix5. Compare later plumet n.
