Etymology: < scientific Latin Plumeria (J. Pitton de Tournefort Inst. Rei Herbariæ (1700) I. 659) < Plumerius , Latinized name of C. Plumier , French botanist (1646–1706): see -ia suffix¹. In form Plumieria after the taxonomically invalid scientific Latin synonym Plumieria ( G. A. Scopoli Introductio Hist. Nat. (1777) 155), an emendation based on the French form of Plumier's name.

Botany.

A genus of tropical trees (family Apocynaceae), having large, fragrant, white, yellow, or purplish salver-shaped flowers in terminal cymes, including the frangipani or pagoda tree, Plumeria rubra, of the West Indies and Central America; (also plumeria) a tree of this genus.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 209.
