Etymology: < pole n.2 + Antarctic adj., after Middle French pole antartique (c1270 in Old French as pole antartike; French pôle antarctique ) or its model classical Latin antarcticus polus (itself after ancient Greek ἀνταρκτικὸς πόλος ). Compare Spanish polo antártico (c1350), Italian polo antartico (a1282 as polo artantico , transmission error).
