Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Polaristrobometer.
Etymology: < German Polaristrobometer ( H. Wild Ueber ein neues Polaristrobometer (1865) 1) < polari- (in Polarisation polarization n.) + ancient Greek στρόβος a whirling round (see stroboscope n.) + German -ometer -ometer comb. form.The instrument was devised in 1865 by Prof. H. Wild of Zurich, who objected to the term polarimeter for an instrument that measures not the amount of polarization, but the angle of rotation of the plane of polarization.
Chemistry. Now rare.
A kind of polarimeter used for measuring the amount of rotation of the plane of polarization when polarized light is passed through an optically active substance, esp. a sugar solution.
