Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: polarization n., -scope comb. form.
Etymology: < polari- (in polarization n., polarize v., etc.) + -scope comb. form. Compare French polariscope (1844 or earlier).An instrument with a somewhat similar function was described in French by D. F. J. Arago in 1811 ( Mém. de la classe des sci. math. et physiques de l 'Inst. Impérial de France i. 108), but was not called by this name.

An instrument for showing the polarization of light, or for viewing objects in polarized light; a polarimeter.
