单词 plumby
释义

plumbyadj.

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: plumb n.1, -y suffix3.
Etymology: < plumb n.1 + -y suffix3, after Middle French plomé lead-coloured (1306 in Old French in this sense; earlier in senses ‘made of lead’ (late 12th cent. in Old French as plummee), ‘weighted with lead’ (c1260 in Old French as ploumez, plural)). N.E.D. (1907) notes: ‘In quot. 1586 apparently confused with plummy adj.2, as if it meant “plum-coloured”.’ This quot. may in fact reflect a historical perception of ‘purple’ as a mixture of all colours (which could encompass a dirty grey), rather than the modern idea of the colour; plummy adj.2 is in any case not otherwise attested until the first half of the 18th cent.
Heraldry. Obsolete.
Of a cloudy or leaden colour.
