单词 plumbous
释义

plumbousadj.

Brit. /ˈplʌmbəs/, U.S. /ˈpləmbəs/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin plumbōsus.
Etymology: < classical Latin plumbōsus containing lead < plumbum lead (see plumb n.1) + -ōsus -ous suffix. Compare French plombeux made of lead (1549 in Middle French; now obsolete), containing lead (1568 in Middle French in an isolated attestation in Paré, subsequently from 1831), Spanish plumboso (rare) resembling lead, leaden (c1586 or earlier), containing lead (1856 or earlier), Italian piomboso (rare) resembling lead, leaden (also figurative), containing lead (all 14th cent.). Compare earlier plumbeous adj., and (with sense 2) earlier plumbic adj. 1.
1. Resembling lead; leaden (in various senses). Cf. plumbeous adj. Now rare.
