Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin plumbum , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin plumbum lead (see plumb n.1) + -ite suffix1, after French plombite (E. Frémy 1843, in Jrnl. de pharmacie 3 31). Compare plumbate n.1
Chemistry.
A salt containing oxyanions or hydroxy anions of divalent lead, formed e.g. by the action of alkalis on lead( ii) hydroxide; any of these anions. Also: a mixed oxide of divalent lead and another metal (e.g. sodium). Cf. plumbate n.1
